The death date was previously recorded as January 28, 1892. January 28, 1892 was a Thursday, but the reverse reads "Friday, January 22nd, 1892" — and January 22, 1892 was in fact a Friday, confirming 22 (not 28) as the correct reading and date.

The 1880 census of Delafield, Waukesha County, Wisconsin places John Martin, age 54, a clergyman born in Ohio (father born Virginia, mother born Ohio), heading a household of:

  • Harry Martin (son, 13, born Ohio)
  • Benjamin Martin (son, 11, born Wisconsin)

The 1880 age of 54 implies a birth year near 1826, consistent with the birth year recorded on the back of the cabinet card.

This is a large cabinet card photo of a display of funeral flowers and a picture of the man who had died. He is identified on the back as, Rev. John Martin. He died at Hartington, Nebraska on Friday, January 22, 1892 (previously misread here as January 28; the 22nd is both the plainer reading of the handwriting and the date that actually falls on a Friday). He was born in Ohio in 1826. Photo was taken by Kibbee in Hartington, Nebraska, ca. 1892.
