Obituary:
At 5 minutes to 5 o'clock yesterday morning Abraham L. BOWMAN; an old and
respected citizen of this place passed peacefully into the great hereafter,
in the presence of his numerous family, at the advanced age of sixty two
years.
The deceased was born in York county, Pennsylvania, where he continued to
live until about eight years ago, when he moved to this place where he has
since resided.
At the age of twenty-one years he was married to Miss HORNER, who now
survives him. A large family of children was born to them, some of whom
have
preceeded their father to that happy land, where he was welcomed by the
angel
band, when he laid down the mortal and put on immortality.
At the time of this death, his children, seven in number, four boys, John
H.,
Andrew, J. Abraham Jr., and Harry, and three daughters, Mary, unmarried,
Susan, wife of James SYKES, and Lydia, wife of Henry KIMMEL, were all at
his
bedside, weeping because their father could not longer be spared to them.
In early life he took an active part in politics and filled several
official
stations, but seeing the hollowness and mockery of such a life, he forsook
the ways of the world, and became a member of the Dunkard church, since
which
time he has taken no part in politics and ever conducted himself as became
a
meek and lowly follower of the Savior of men.
Mr. BOWMAN had no relatives on his side, except one brother who resides in
Fremont, Ohio.
His epitaph, and it would be a most apprpriate one, should be, "He lived
respected and died regretted."
The funeral will take place at the church at ten o'clock this morning.
