The Oakdale Cemetery was Wilmington's first municipal burial ground. Chartered in 1852 and opened in 1855, this landscaped 165-acre Victorian-era burying ground contains graves of many of the famous and not so famous. Oakdale contains graves of approximately 400 unknown Confederate soldiers that were reinterred to this cemetery. The Confederate Memorial Monument is located in Oakdale Cemetery. Amid the monuments lies an open field with no markers that is the mass grave of hundreds of victims of the yellow fever epidemic in 1862. At the cemetery office, you can pick up a free map detailing some of the more interesting interments. The cemetery is open from 8 AM to 5 PM daily. Oakdale Cemetery office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to noon and 1 to 4:30 PM. Admission is free.
