About this record

This is a newspaper article, not a photograph of the coffin plate itself. In 1911, workmen unearthed a small casket while digging the foundations of the old Eleventh Street Opera House, on a site formerly occupied by a church and graveyard; most bodies were moved when the graveyard was cleared in 1850, but this one was apparently left behind. The brass plate's inscription was legible enough to be quoted in the article. Coroner Ford (a surname coincidence — no known family relation to the deceased) declared the case did not concern him, and it was expected the Board of Health would arrange removal of the casket.
