Ach, unser Sohn er lebt nicht mehr,
Der Platz in unserm Kreis ist leer
Er reicht uns nicht mehr seine Hand
Der Tod zerriß das schöne Band.
O, was der Teure uns gewesen
Kann niemand fühlen und auch lesen.
Drum eingegraben wie in Erz
Bleibt er in uns'rer Mitte [?] Herz.
Wenn Liebe könnte Wunder tun
Und Tränen Tote wecken,

Gottlieb Bischel was a Mountain Troop Artillery soldier. He died in Augsburg 03.01.1919, at the age of 21.
English translation of the card text: In pious remembrance in prayer of the honourable and virtuous young man Gottlieb Bischel, soldier in the mountain artillery, who died a hero's death for the Fatherland from an insidious illness on 3 January 1919, at the age of 21 years and 10 months, in the reserve military hospital at Augsburg. Ah, our son lives no more; his place in our circle is empty. He no longer reaches out his hand to us — death has torn the beautiful bond. What the dear one was to us, no one can feel or read; therefore, engraved as if in bronze, he remains in the heart of our midst. If love could work miracles and tears could wake the dead, then most surely no foreign earth would cover you. These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
