Contributor's notes & card translation
Jager Johann Bruckl, 3 Company 2 Bavarian Jager Batl. After 21 months in combat, he was killed by a round to the chest in heavy fighting at Siebenburgen, 2 November 1916. He was 23. Back of card has Jesus appearing to a wounded soldier. Prayer cards are a Roman Catholic tradition. They are given to family and friends who attend the funeral and are sent to those relatives unable to attend.
English translation of the card text: My Jesus, be merciful to him! In pious remembrance in prayer of the honourable young man Johann Brükl, farmer's son from Zillendorf, Jäger in the 2nd Bavarian Jäger Battalion, 3rd Company, who on 2 November 1916, after 21 months of faithful fulfilment of duty, died a hero's death for the Fatherland in the heavy fighting in Siebenbürgen (Transylvania), in his 23rd year of life, as the result of a shot to the chest. [Verse, partly illegible:] As a faithful son you were chosen for the world war — and now, brave one, we have lost you forever. [The closing lines, apparently expressing hope of resurrection and reunion, are not fully legible.] These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
