Army Soldat Xaver Gmach, 2 Company 11 Bavarian Infantry Regiment. Killed 28 September 1916. He was 21. Back of card has Crucifix appearing to a wounded soldier. Prayer cards are a Roman Catholic tradition. They are given to family and friends who attend the funeral and are sent to those relatives unable to attend.
English translation of the card text: Prayer remembrance for the virtuous young man Xaver Gmach, smallholder's son of Oberwalting, soldier in the Royal Bavarian 11th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Company, who on 28 September 1916, at the age of 21 years, died a hero's death for the Fatherland. May he rest in peace! My Jesus, mercy! (100 days' indulgence.) Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you! (300 days' indulgence.) [These] indulgences [are to be applied] to the dear departed. Printed by Cl. Attenkofer's printing house, Straubing. These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
