Contributor's notes & card translation
Franz Hackner age 20 from Oberrott, Bavaria. Soldier in 3. Bavarian Inf. Reg., 1. Komp. Died on 23. August 1915 in Kopatschew, Russia.
English translation of the card text: In pious remembrance in prayer of the virtuous young man Mr. Franz Hackner, smallholder's son from Oberrott, parish of Lohkirchen, soldier in the 3rd Bavarian Infantry Regiment, 1st Company, who on 23 August 1915, in an engagement near Kopatschew (in Russia), at the age of 20 years, suffered a hero's death for God, King and Fatherland. In fierce battle he bled his young life away, far from his loved ones, out in enemy land. Death came quickly — you did not have to suffer much; it was the finest death, you died it for the Fatherland. All for Thee, most sacred Heart of Jesus! (100 days' indulgence.) These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
