Fern von der lieben Heimat mein, / Muß
ich mein Leben lassen. / Euch mags ein
arger Schmerz wohl sein, / Ihr könnt
freilich es kaum fassen, / Doch tröstet Euch
und drückt im Geiste / Mir noch einmal
die Hand, / Ich starb den schönsten Tod, /

English translation of the card text: Christian remembrance in prayer of the virtuous young man Rupert Murauer, farmer's son from Burgholz, Jäger in the 1st Bavarian Jäger Battalion, 4th Company, holder of the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Cross of Merit 3rd Class, who on 28 April 1918, in his 25th year of life, died a hero's death for the Fatherland during the fighting on the Western Front, struck by an artillery shell. — Far from my dear homeland, I must lay down my life. It may well be a bitter sorrow for you; indeed you can scarcely grasp it. But take comfort, and in spirit press my hand once more — I died the most beautiful death, the hero's death for the Fatherland. — Printed by A. Lebner, Simbach a. I. These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
