German card text transcribed from the card photograph; uncertain readings are marked [?]. An English translation is given in the research notes below. Sources differ on the age: the card's "im 21. Lebensjahre" means 20 completed years, while our original posting recorded 21. This record follows the card reading; both are preserved.

Contributor's notes & card translation

Soldat, 12. Infanterie Regiment 10. Kompanie wounded 26.6.1916 by shot into lung + 4.7.1916 in a lazarett 21 years old

English translation of the card text: For pious remembrance in prayer of the virtuous young man Alois Ostner, farmer's son of [illegible], soldier in the 12th Infantry Regiment, 10th Company, who was severely wounded on 26 June by a shot to the lung and, provided with the holy sacraments of the dying, died for the Fatherland in a field hospital on 4 July 1916, in his 21st year of life. [The concluding verse, the prayers with indulgence notes, and the printer line are illegible in this scan.] These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
