German card text transcribed from the card photograph; uncertain readings are marked [?]. An English translation is given in the research notes below. Sources differ on his age: the card reads "im 33. Lebensjahre" (in his 33rd year of life, i.e. aged 32), while the contributor's notes below say "He was 33 years old". This record follows the card reading; both readings are preserved.

Contributor's notes & card translation

Nikolaus Robl was formerly a postman in Westerham. He served in the 11th Bavarian Infantry Regiment, 5 Company, with the rank of Gefreiter. On the 25th of July 1916 he "...suffered a hero's death for the Fatherland..." at Fleury. He was 33 years old.


English translation of the card text: In pious remembrance in prayer of Mr. Nikolaus Robl, postman of Westerham, Gefreiter in the 11th Bavarian Infantry Regiment, 5th Company, who on 25 July 1916, in the 33rd year of his life, suffered a hero's death for the Fatherland at Fleury. These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
