Josef Tremmel was in the 12th Bavarian Infantry Regiment; he was killed in June 1916 and buried in France.
English translation of the card text: In prayerful remembrance of the virtuous young man Josef Tremmel, farmer's son from Zolching, soldier in the 12th Infantry Regiment, 8th Company, who at the beginning of June 1916, in the fighting before Verdun, died a hero's death in the 20th year of his life. "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, to you I give my heart and my soul." (300 days' indulgence) "Holy Joseph, friend of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us." (300 days' indulgence) Verse: You fought for the Fatherland — how hard was the farewell! Now you rest in a foreign land; we shall see you no more. Dearly beloved, rest in peace, may the foreign earth lie lightly upon you! We gladly bear what God has ordained; our path, too, points upward. Printed by G. Gahmann, Taufkirchen an der Vils. These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
