welcher am 10. Mai 1916, 21 Jahre alt,
den Heldentod für Gott, König und
Vaterland erlitten hat. Er war der
Stolz und die Freude seiner Eltern.
Auf fremder Erde schlummerst du
Von fremder Hand gebracht zur Ruh.
Bitter ach! Ist unser Schmerz!
Doch unser Aug' schaut himmelwärts,
Wo du nun weilst in ew'ger Wonne,
Geschmückt mit einer Heldenkrone.
Denn die für Herd und Heimat sterben,
Vom Herren[?] als Lohn die Krone erben!!
Heiliger Erzengel Michael, beschütze uns
im Kampfe, damit wir im furchtbaren Gericht

Xaver Winkler from Arbing, Bavaria. Soldier in 3. Inf. Reg., 6. Komp. He died 10th. May 1916. According to German war grave register he is buried in Consenvoye, France, in a comrades grave.
English translation of the card text: In pious remembrance in prayer of the virtuous young man Mr. Xaver Winkler, smallholder's son from Arbing, parish of Niedertaufkirchen, soldier in the 3rd Bavarian Infantry Regiment, 6th Company, who on 10 May 1916, at 21 years of age, suffered a hero's death for God, King and Fatherland. He was the pride and joy of his parents. — On foreign soil you slumber, laid to rest by a stranger's hand. Bitter, oh, is our pain! Yet our eye looks heavenward, where you now dwell in eternal bliss, adorned with a hero's crown. For those who die for hearth and home receive the crown from the Lord as their reward! — Holy Archangel Michael, protect us in battle, so that we may not perish in the terrible judgment. (300 days' indulgence.) — Printed by Hermann [illegible], Neumarkt a. R. These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
