OBITUARY.

Hon. A. A. Cohen.—This well-known pioneer and distinguished lawyer died suddenly on the overland train, near Cheyenne, on Wednesday morning last. The deceased was born in Jamaica, of English parents, and came to California in 1849. He immediately embarked in commercial pursuits and acted as the Sacramento agent of the old Adams' Express Company. The deceased was also a man of deep literary tastes, and in the course of his reading he dived into sundry law books, which so interested him that he made a methodical study of legal science and secured admission to the Bar. His mind was naturally cast in the legal mold. He grasped fundamental principles and applied them to active questions with the greatest facility, and from the moment of his admission to the Bar he took a front place, [...]

[...] In the earlier days of the State he was somewhat extensively engaged in the building and operating of railroads, ferries and other transportation facilities. These interests he finally disposed of to the C. P. R. R. people, whose attorney he was. There were subsequent troubles between him and that combination, but eventually he resumed a leading position on their staff and was engaged in their employment at the time of his death. In the investigation of the railroad company's affairs, which took place in San Francisco last Summer and in New York this Fall, he particularly distinguished himself. Mr. Cohen was a gentleman of dignified presence and courtly manners, and in his domestic relations was a good husband and father. He left a widow, four sons and three daughters. The fortune left behind him is estimated by millions.
