The obituary

Inscription transcription

August Newport, superintendent and overseer in several departments of the Medlicott company's mill at Windsor Locks for many years, died on Thursday and will be buried this afternoon. He was 54 years of age and had been sick for nearly two years with an affection of the brain. He was universally respected. The Masonic lodge, of which he was recently treasurer, will turn out in a body to attend his funeral, which will take place at his late residence at 2:30 this afternoon.

Our archive originally carried this obituary in two separate postings, merged here into one record. The clipping is undated and the newspaper unidentified; the death year 1880 is taken from our archive's index entry ("1826~1880") and is consistent with the contributor's 1880 census find and the stated age of 54. The obituary does not name the place of death; his residence and workplace were at Windsor Locks, Connecticut. The photographed clipping continues past the obituary into an unrelated news item about a proposed sewer from the depot to the ferry crossing, not transcribed here. The original caption reads: "Photo: S.H. Waite's, 271 Main St. Hartford Connecticut".
