Stacy & Kyes Store in Rushford, Allegany County New York

This great old ledger book is from the Stacy & Kyes store in Rushford, Allegany County New York. Stacy and Kyes sold drugs, paints, books, groceries and just about everything else you can think of. The ledger starts in 1868 and ends in 1872. I had a look in the 1860 United States Federal Census and found that the folks that are listed in this ledger are not just from Rushford. Many people travelled for many miles to shop at the Stacy and Kyes store. I found people from Centerville and New Hudson, New York as well as other communities. The entries for each person are in many cases quite fascinating. A ledger like this gives a great look into the day to day lives of our ancestors in the years just after the Civil War. I have scanned the index pages from the ledger and put them online.

The first settler arrived in what was to become the Town of Rushford in 1808. The Town of Rushford was formed in 1816 from part of the Town of Caneadea. Part of Rushford was taken to form the newer Town of New Hudson in 1825.

The Gazetteer and Business Directory Of Allegany County, N.Y. for 1875 lists a Kyes, Wm. E as a seller of dry goods, groceries, boots, shoes, hats, caps, crockery &c., on Main Street in Rushford.

When Rushford Lake was formed by a dam on Caneadea Creek in 1927, the communities of East Rushford and Kelloggville were flooded by the rising water. The ledger's name index survives as photographed pages (not yet transcribed); the gallery below is labelled by letter range.
