Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada — Marriage Register Scans, 1896–1908 (Page 1 of 2)

Photographed marriage-register pages for Cumberland County, Nova Scotia — Springhill, Amherst, West Brook, Oxford, and Salt Springs, 1896–1908 (page 1 of 2).

8 photographs. Scans of all eight photographed register pages, with a transcription of the 90 legible marriage entries across seven of them.

The following is a few scans of some marriage records for Cumberland County Nova Scotia. Springhill, Amherst, West Brook, Oxford, Salt Springs. Please note that they are not complete. I took the scans for my own research so I only have the pages that were of interest to me. I have put them online as they may be of use to someone else. You should also be aware that each page is not complete. For most of the scans I only have the first 1/2. That is the page that has When, Where and How Married, Name and Signatures of Parties, Age, Condition, Rank or Profession. I did not get the second 1/2 of the page that has Residence, Where Born, Parents and Witnesses. The marriage records that I have start in 1896.

Transcribed directly from the eight photographed register pages in this record's gallery. Seven of the eight images show the register's first-half columns (When/Where/How Married, Names and Signatures of the Parties, Age, Condition, Rank or Profession) and yielded 90 marriage entries, each producing a groom and bride entry above. These seven images come from at least two distinct physical register volumes with independent page numbering and per-year entry numbering (a common Nova Scotia vital-statistics convention): a county-general volume (pages 47-49, all dated 1896, No.46-90) and a Springhill-district volume spanning multiple years (page 154 in 1896 at No.71-84; an unnumbered page in 1899 at No.15-28; page 255 in 1902 at No.15-28; and page 272 in 1902 at No.253-266). Entry numbers repeat across years within the same volume because numbering resets annually — identical numbers on different pages here (e.g. two "No.15" entries) are NOT the same marriage. The eighth image, cumberland_county_pg49a.jpg, is a second-half continuation page (headed "In the County of Cumberland, 1906") showing Residence, Where Born, Parents, Rank or Profession, and Witnesses/Officiating Minister columns for roughly 15 additional marriages — but it has no visible entry numbers and, critically, no party names at all (those were on that page's first half, which was not photographed and is not part of this collection, per the contributor's own note above). Because there is nothing to name a person by, no person entries were created from pg49a; its content is an orphaned fragment of an otherwise-unrepresented 1906 register and is preserved only as an image, pending discovery of its matching first-half page. Many entries above carry a bracketed [?] or "[surname uncertain]" marker where cursive handwriting, ink fading, or water/foxing staining prevented a confident reading — these should be checked against the original scans before being treated as fact. A few ages (e.g. Nos. 76 and 78) were themselves too faint to read with confidence and are marked "age uncertain" rather than guessed. This transcription has not yet had an independent proofreading pass against the source images.

One collection of Cumberland County marriage-register scans (Springhill, Amherst, West Brook, Oxford, Salt Springs, 1896–1908) split across two pages in the legacy archive.
