About this record
Marriage
Mary Jane Griffith married William Hall on 8 January 1872 in Bondhead, Simcoe Co., Ontario. The couple had seven children (five daughters, two sons) and moved to Gordon Twp., Manitoulin Island, about 1884. Full census tables for the household appear on William Hall's coffin plate record (same photograph).
Birth date
Her birth date of 30 May 1848 (Tottenham, Simcoe Co., Ontario) is a family-record date and lines up almost exactly with the plate's inscribed age of 74 at her 22 June 1922 death. Census self-reports drift, as usual for the era: the 1901 census gives 30 May 1852 (age 48), and the 1911 census gives an estimated birth of 1850 (age 61) — both a few years later than the family-record date used here.
Ethnic origin note
The 1881 census records her ethnic/racial origin as "Irish" despite her being Ontario-born — a Griffith family origin, not a birthplace discrepancy.
