Josef Berger,

von Schwaim,

Landwehrmann im 2. Inf. Rgt. 9. Komp.,

welcher am 29. August 1916 an der Somme

durch eine Granate verschüttet, im 38. Le-

bensjahre den Heldentod fürs Vaterland

starb.

In fremder Erde einsam dort begraben,

Da ruhet still ein tapferer Soldat.

Und Gottes Segen wird belohnet haben,

Die schlichte, treue, tapfere Ruhmestat.

Contributor's notes & card translation

We're all anxious to find our ancestors - and find them fast! These records may help you find a brick-wall ancestor easily and from the comfort of your computer chair.

English translation of the card text: Honour the memory of the young man Josef Berger of Schwaim, Landwehrmann (militia soldier) in the 2nd Infantry Regiment, 9th Company, who on 29 August 1916 at the Somme was buried alive by a shell and died a hero's death for the Fatherland in the 38th year of his life. Buried there, lonely, in foreign soil, a brave soldier rests in silence. And God's blessing will have rewarded the simple, loyal, valiant deed of glory. Printed by Xaver Mühlberger, Griesbach. These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
