This is a vintage "Black Edge Memorial Card" from 1924.

This card was posted on August 21, 1924 concerning the death of Henry K. Garrison, of Centerton, NJ that occured the previous day. The funeral was handled by The Christy Funeral Home (Elmer NJ), owned and operated since 1898 and still in business in Cumberland County, NJ today.

These cards come in various forms, but they almost always had a black edge on them. When the recipient of the card received it, they knew immediately that "bad news" had arrived. Some were printed and then folded to make a professional-looking envelope, which the sender sealed, addressed and mailed. Others were printed on heavy card stock, and were mailed in a separate envelope. All had information on them that one might expect in an obituary.
