English translation of the card text: Pious remembrance of Mathias Hauer, son of the Schredl farm in Hundshagen, parish of St. Marienkirchen, patrol leader in an imperial-royal (k. k.) Landesschützen raiding company, who on 2 May 1916, on the Italian theatre of war, in the 28th year of his life, found a hero's death in the fight for the fatherland's honour. Verse: You took leave of your parents and brothers and sisters, never to see them again, and our hearts would break with grief. Heavy is the blow that has struck us, torn is the tender bond — yet sweet consolation remains to us: you died a hero for the fatherland. Printer's line: A. Pillinger in St. Marienkirchen; printed by Johann Vees, Schärding. These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
