Contributor's notes & card translation
Joseph was an "Armierungs Soldat," literally a 'reinforcement' soldier. He died "for the Fatherland" in a military hospital in Strassburg on the 24th of February 1917. Although he was 35 years old when he died, it seems that the only photograph of Joseph that the family could supply was as a youngster
English translation of the card text: In pious remembrance in prayer of the honourable Joseph Maurer, Armierungssoldat (fortification/entrenchment soldier), who died for the Fatherland on 24 February 1917 at the age of 35 in a military hospital at Strassburg. Sweet Heart of Jesus, be my love! (300 days' indulgence) Merciful Jesus, grant him eternal rest! (7 years, 280 days' indulgence) These small prayer cards (Sterbebilder) were given to family and friends in the Roman Catholic tradition.
