one by one earths ties are broken as we see our love decay and the hopes so fondly cherished brighten but to pass away one by one our hopes grow brighter as we near the shining shore for we know across the river wait the loved ones gone before

Written in pencil and ink on the back of the card, for the family: "mothers father, my violas grandfather". The photograph shows this card together with the death card of Charles Baumeister.

Brian's notes

Reading these two cards, I took them to mean that they were written on by an unnamed man, born 1899 and writing on the card in 1974, who had married a woman named "Viola". Viola's father was Charles Baumeister (from the card) who died in 1905, age 45.

From Philip Stubenvoll's card I saw that he was Viola's grandfather, and that Viola's mother had married Charles Baumeister. So I went on a hunt for a Baumeister-Stubenvoll marriage sometime around 1880-1890 and found it — Charles Baumeister married Catherine Stubenvoll on 28 April 1899 in New York. Catherine was the daughter of Philip Stubenvoll and Louisa Kerr. I also found an entry for Charles Baumeister born in New York 1860, the son of Frederick Baumeister and Amelia Spangler.
