A biography of Mariah's son Richard appears in Howard County Missouri Biographies (Richmond Township, part 1): R. J. Payne was born on his present farm May 1, 1825, his father being Robert Payne of Scott County, Kentucky. On May 25, 1848 he married Miss Leonora Benson of Howard County, daughter of Zachariah and Martha Benson of Kentucky; she died May 6, 1866, leaving four children — Laura F., William, Thomas J. and Robert W.
