About James Cecil Sandercock

James Cecil Sandercock (1898–1918) of St. Marys, Ontario — our archive's index entry titles him "James C Sandercock"; the compiled St. Marys cenotaph register lists him as "Cecil James"; he signed himself "Cecil, Pte. J. C. Sandercock, No. 727784, 4th C.M.R." in the letter home preserved on his brother's record. That letter, printed in the St. Marys Journal in September 1917, tells how a shell landed in the trench where he and his brother William George Sandercock were working on the night of 23 August 1917 — William was killed and James was wounded in the knee. James returned to the line and was killed in action at Arras on 28 August 1918, ten days after his unit's part in the opening of the Hundred Days Offensive. The compiled cenotaph register records him with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles, killed in action at Arras, France.
