MEMORIAL SERVICE IN MANITOBA

Mr. S. Sandercock, St. Marys, had just gone West, to assist his brother at Clearwater, Manitoba, with the harvest, when an official wire from Ottawa told the mother of the death of one of their boys and the wounding of another at the Front in France. The word reached her husband just one hour after his arrival at his brother's in the West. A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, Sept. 16th in the Anglican Church at Clearwater and Rev. F. Halliwell, the English Church Clergyman there, very thoughtfully and kindly sends The Journal a few lines as below in regard to it:—

Dear Sir:—

I thought I would write a short account of the memorial service in our Church last Sunday on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Sandercock, whose son, Pte. William George, made the supreme sacrifice in a recent battle.

I felt, as a Clergyman, it was my duty on hearing that the father, after having arrived only an hour in our town, received word that William George had been killed and James Cecil wounded, to meet Mr. Sandercock and express the sympathy of our citizens in his hour of trial.

Last Sunday I arranged for a memorial service, the church was decorated suitably for the occasion and crowded with people. I emphasized the fact that in a lesser degree their loss is also ours, as in the Christian Church we are one family.

Also, I would like the Canadian Order of Foresters of your neighborhood to know that those members of the Court of our Town who could possibly get away attended to show their last respect to the Brother, though they knew him not.

HIS BROTHER KILLED.

Mrs. Samuel Sandercock is in receipt of the following letter, dated August 25th, from her son Cecil, telling of his brother "Bill's" death while working in the same trench.

Dear Mother and Father:—

Just a few lines, hoping you are well. I guess you will have heard the news of my brother's death before this letter reaches you. Bill and I went out on a working party on the night of August 23rd. We were both together working when a shell lit in the trench. Bill was killed. I got a slight wound in the knee. I was lucky I was not killed too.

Now mother, I will write again in a few days, when the Battalion comes out of the line.
