The will

Abstract & transcription

This is the copy will, codicil and probate, all on vellum, of Catherine Kitchin of the parish of Saint George the Martyr in the county of Middlesex. In her will, originally dated August 1782, she asks to be buried at Hampstead with her late husband in "a decent but not costly burial" and she leaves £50 and an additional £10 "for mourning" to Amelia Johnson with the remainder of her estate going to her daughter Catherine who is appointed sole executrix.

However, in a codicil apparently written on paper and dated 31st July 1784, she revokes the legacies to Amelia Johnson which she states were left "towards settling her in the Business of Wills Coffee House in Serls Street, Lincolns Inn Fields..." but, instead, leaves the sum of One Guinea "for a Ring in token of my friendship...." to Amelia Thomas. Presumably Amelia got married and changed her mind about the coffee house.

The probate is dated 21st October 1785 and was issued by the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury whose paper seal is attached by a vellum tag.

Abstract from the Ancestors at Rest archive. The surname appears as both Kitchind and Kitchin in the original page. The second Catherine listed is the testator's daughter, appointed sole executrix and residual beneficiary.
