Wooster Cemetery, Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio

This old photograph of Wooster Cemetery was taken about 1900. The cemetery lies on Madison Avenue in Wooster, Ohio, and was established about 1840.

The land it stands on once belonged to the Delaware chief Beaver Hat, who kept his cabin and apple orchard here. The orchard was a gift from his friend John Chapman — better known as Johnny Appleseed — who lived nearby.

Two members of Congress are believed to be buried at Wooster. Martin Welker (1819–1902), a Representative from Ohio, was born in Knox County, Ohio, on April 25, 1819. He was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth, Fortieth, and Forty-first Congresses, and in 1873 President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him a United States judge for the northern district of Ohio — a post he held until he retired in 1889. He died in Wooster on March 15, 1902.

Lewis Philip Ohliger (1843–1923) was born in the Rheinpfalz, Bavaria, Germany, on January 3, 1843. He immigrated to the United States in October 1854 with his parents and settled in Canton, Ohio, in 1857. Elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress to fill the vacancy left by the death of John G. Warwick, he served from December 5, 1892, to March 3, 1893. He died in San Diego, California, on January 9, 1923, and was interred in Wooster Cemetery.
